Under the contract with the Capital Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Capital Metro), the Texas A&M Transportation Institute conducted the following studies:
- understanding safety concerns beyond crash frequency and identifying bus routes with higher rates of crashes
- evaluating Capital Metro’s rear end safety campaign implemented in 2016 and again in 2017 to address rear end crashes where the other vehicle rear ends the bus
- studying the impact of narrower travel lanes in the City of Austin on bus safety
These studies were submitted to Capital Metro in three individual reports with the details of the literature review, data collection, study methodology, analysis results, and conclusions. Capital Metro will use this knowledge to continue enhancing bus safety.
